Your data is worth?

What is data?

Distinct pieces of information usually formatted in a special way. All software is divided into two general categories: data and programs. Programs are collections of instructions for manipulating data.

Data can exist in a variety of forms - as numbers or text on pieces of paper, as bits and bytes stored in electronic memory, or as facts stored in a person's mind.

(Ugh. Computerese!!!) Simply, data is the word processing files, pictures, address books, email addresses stored on your hard drive for easy retrieval.  Should this data be lost, how much would it be worth?  Can it be replaced?  An actual example, a client had over $7000.00 worth of software (programs, more on this later), his harddrive crashed.  No backup or clone.  And this did not include the 14 web sites he had stored on the same harddrive.  He calculated he lost more than 2000 hours of work.  Most of his programs were downloaded so he did not have them on a CD.

Programs (software) differ from data in that programs are a set of instructions for collecting and manipulating data, i.e. Microsoft Word, Excel, and database specific programs.
